EISCAT Radar School 2024 Brought Together Students from Around the World to Kilpisjärvi

The International EISCAT Incoherent Scatter Radar School was organized by UiT The Arctic University of Norway and held from 12–16 August 2024 in Kilpisjärvi, Finland. Students attended the school from institutions in the UK, Norway, Japan, France, Sweden, and Germany.

The school covered topics related to incoherent scatter radar measurements, such as introduction to ionospheric physics, the basics of radar, the principle of incoherent scatter, how to plan a radar experiment, how to run a radar experiment, how to access incoherent scatter radar data on-line, how to analyse incoherent scatter radar data, examples of science applications of incoherent scatter radars, the basics of active ionospheric modification on experiments (heating), and phased-array radars.

Hands-On Learning

The students were able to run their own experiments with the EISCAT incoherent scatter radars and analyze the data in groups during group work sessions. Included with the school was a site visit to the EISCAT_3D Radar that is currently under commissioning.
